The Need For Sincere and Ongoing Support

As the single parent of a young adult on the Autism Spectrum, I have a lot of day to day stress just in trying to get him through his day. I also have lots of stress looking for a job, caring for the rest of my family and all of their needs. It is so easy to get depressed and begin feeling like there is no point in trying to move forward as there is always someone or something that is pulling you back into the vortex of despair.

In the early years when my son was young, and his behavior beyond difficult, I tended to isolate myself from the world......it seemed that no one knew what was going on with him, but everyone had a solution for me that either I had tried, or just made no sense.

Somewhere during those years, the thought occurred to me that I really did need to stop isolating myself and my child, and find people who "got it". That is just what I did, and what I have continued to do since moving from Pennsylvania to Colorado just under two years ago.

I would like to share with you today a reading that I discovered that reflects my philosophy on how to survive

and who one needs to help you through!

“A person’s emotional being is like an ocean. The people in your life are separated into three different categories. You have the sailors: they won’t touch the water. They opt to stay inside the boat. These people are your acquaintances, or “surface” friends, and they never make it deep. You then have the snorkelers. These are the friends who want to go deep, but don’t have the emotional capacity to carry the pressure and weight. If they make an attempt, they either drown or are forced to go back to the surface for oxygen. Finally, let’s talk about the deep sea divers. These are the people who stay with you through storms and violent waters, and they aren’t afraid to dive to the darkest parts of the ocean floor: they stay with you, in the water, through the worst times. They aren’t afraid to call out your bullshit. They’re the people who are there for you no matter what happens. We all need the third type of people in our lives.”
